Sendang Gile and Tiu Kelep are located around Senaru on the northern side of Lombok, close to the landscapes of Mount Rinjani. From a villa in the south, the journey is substantial and should be treated as a full-day expedition or part of an overnight northern itinerary. The reward is a dramatic change of scenery: coastal hills give way to greener roads, village life and forest paths cooled by water and elevation. Leaving early creates a safer margin for walking and the return drive.
What to expect
Sendang Gile is generally the more accessible of the two waterfalls, while reaching Tiu Kelep involves a longer walk and may include wet or uneven sections. Conditions change after rain. Stones become slippery, river levels rise and a route that looked simple in an old photograph may be unsuitable on the day. Hire a legitimate local guide, follow closures and do not pressure anyone to continue when weather or water makes the route unsafe.
Wear shoes with grip rather than smooth sandals, and protect electronics in a dry bag. Bring water, a light rain layer, insect protection, a towel and dry clothes for the vehicle. Swimming may not always be advisable, so ask the guide and observe current conditions. Falling water, hidden rocks and strong flow create risks that are not obvious from a scenic viewpoint. Children and less confident walkers need close supervision throughout the route.
Make it memorable
Senaru is more than an access point. Allow time for a meal, conversation and appreciation of the village setting rather than arriving only for a photograph. Use local guides and eateries so spending supports the community managing visitor access. Keep noise low, stay on paths and carry out all rubbish. If the group is tired after the walk, adjust the return plan rather than racing darkness. A waterfall day should feel refreshing, not like an endurance test imposed on a holiday.

Travel times in Lombok are estimates rather than guarantees. Road works, ceremonies, rain, traffic and short stops can change the day, so avoid stacking several distant attractions into one schedule. Confirm current opening information, prices and local restrictions shortly before departure. Download an offline map, carry drinking water and small Indonesian rupiah notes, and share the route with someone in the group. Use a reputable driver when nobody is comfortable navigating local roads. Scooter riders should be properly licensed, experienced and wearing a secure helmet; a short distance does not remove the risk.
Responsible choices improve the experience for visitors and residents. Spend with local guides, drivers, warungs and makers when possible, ask permission before photographing people and keep clothing considerate away from beaches. Refill water bottles, refuse unnecessary plastic and carry every item of rubbish out. Conditions should always override a fixed itinerary, especially around the ocean, waterfalls and exposed hills.
